2018 Confirmed Judges

I am pleased to share that there are now five confirmed judges for the 2018 One Page Dungeon Contest.

ChicagoWiz reached out with concern about the fate of the contest he helped to create in the absence of any current posts on my behalf.  We exchanged a few emails and had a phone conversation about the contest, and he agreed to join the contest once again!

Chgowiz also reached out to ChattyDM, who also agreed to return to the contest for the 10th anniversary!  ChattyDM will also be serving as a judge this year and I look forward to working with two of the original creators of the contest!

Michael Curtis, another one of the original judges from the 2009 One Page Dungeon Contest was unable to serve as a judge this year due to scheduling conflicts, but has agreed to write a retrospective on the contest for the 2018 Compendium!

I was fortunate to count both Martin Thomas and Steve Winter as judges in the 2017 One Page Dungeon Contest, my first year serving as the organizer.  I am happy to share that they have both agreed to return as judges this year. Judging these entries is no small task. While not a judge myself, I used the same system as the judges last year to narrow down picks so that I could have an understanding of what I was asking of the panel, and it was very, very hard to do. The fact that both Martin and Steve are returning for their fifth consecutive years should not be overlooked!

A newcomer to the contest, but certainly not to the community, Jason Sholtis has also agreed to serve as a judge this year!  If you are reading this, you are most likely a fan of his work and his blog. He is a prolific content creator who is something of a champion of system neutrality in my estimation.  I look forward to working with him this year, and on the off chance that you aren't familiar with his work, check it out here: http://roll1d12.blogspot.com/

I am continuing to reach out to the original judges of the 2009 contest, with an open invitation to each, and will update any developments that may arise from that in future posts.

Updated Submission Guide

The Submission Guide for the One Page Dungeon Contest has been updated. It now reflects the new submission address, removes a lot of "Changed" notifications as these elements are the same as the previous year, and I threw in an extra sample "dungeon" that features a non-fantasy genre and different approach (Full Bleed Frame Break). I also updated the cover to include a concept sketch by Michael Richards, the artist who created all of the images used on all of the compendia covers.

The Submission guide can be found on OBS at no cost

Full Disclosure... I was going to sit on this one until April, I had every intention of waiting, but much like my inability to keep a hard candy in my mouth more than five seconds before crunching it to dust, I have clicked "make public" and released the title ahead of schedule.

62 “one page dungeons” are contained within the compendium ranging from the Post-Apocalytpic wastelands and wilderness hex crawls to forlorn mines and crashed star ships.
The dungeons/ adventures were produced by members of the gaming community as entries in the 2010 One Page Dungeon Contest, and are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 license.
By design, the dungeons are fairly system neutral to facilitate their use with your favorite rules system.
The 2010 edition of the One Page Dungeon Compendium is bookmarked, and the orientation of entries (portrait/ landscape) has been preserved within the PDF.

Links, Links, and More Links

Did you know that many, if not most, of the original One Page Dungeon Contest entries have embedded hyperlinks the creators have pointed to their websites and blog posts, often supporting the adventure, and sometimes even expanding upon it.

When I convert the PDFs to tifs, these links are killed. So, once I have put a compendium together, I slowly crawl through each page looking for links, creating invisible rectangles and embedding a new link that replicates the effect of the original. This is easily the most time consuming part of the whole process, but I definitely think it is time well spent. Some links, especially for the older contests, simply don't work anymore, so it is not a guarantee that I can "re-hyperlink" everything, but I try to catch them all.

All Compendia Complete

With a few clicks on the keyboard, I uploaded the print files for the 2010 One Page Compendium. This title will complete the collection. Print Editions for 2017 and 2011 are approved and ready to send off for a proof. Files for 2012, 2010, and 2015 have been uploaded and I am waiting for approval.

One thing I have begun to do is create a second file for download with each title that includes 300ppi images.  When optimizing a PDF per the OBS directions, the images are downsampled to 144ppi (or close to that). In the past I simply went with the optimized version as the 300ppi PDF has a very large file size.

I don't know why it never occurred to me to include both, even though I had the larger file version sitting in a folder on my computer.  I have begun to do this work for the Compendia that were completed last year as well, unfortunately most of the original Indesign files were lost when my computer died a year ago or so. Since then I have taken some precautions against losing everything again, but must recreate each of these Compendia from scratch (2013, 2014, and 2015). I was able to recover some files from the 2016 edition from the fragged hard drive, but will probably recreate it from scratch using the latest template so that all the books are uniform in design and layout.  One good thing is that I am able to fix some minor errors that still lingered in the PDFs in the process.
I have begun with 2015. The PDF versions (large and small file size) have been completed and uploaded, and the print files for the recreated book have been uploaded as well.

Once all the current books (2017, 2015, 2012, 2011, 2010) are approved, I will order the proofs and make them available as soon as possible, and reconfigure some of the bundles as well.
